GERD AND SLEEP

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) can significantly impact sleep due to nighttime acid reflux symptoms. When lying down, gravity no longer helps keep stomach acid down, exacerbating reflux. However, there are strategies to improve sleep for those with GERD:

Sleep Position: Research suggests that sleeping on your left side is beneficial.  This position reduces reflux episodes and minimizes exposure oft he esophagus to stomach acid.

Elevate Your Head: Use a wedge pillow or elevate the head of your bed to prevent acid from flowing upward during sleep.

Sleep Hygiene: Prioritize good sleep habits. Avoid large meals close to bedtime, limit caffeine and alcohol intake, and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Remember, poor sleep can worsen GERD symptom, so it's vital to address both aspects for better overall well-being.
