CPAP Malfunctioning? What to Do When Your Machine Acts Up

If your CPAP machine suddenly starts beeping, leaking air, or just doesn’t feel right, don’t panic—equipment issues are common and often easy to fix. A malfunctioning CPAP can interrupt your sleep and affect your therapy results, but with a little troubleshooting, you can get back on track quickly.

Common CPAP Issues & Quick Fixes

1. No Power or Machine Won’t Turn On

  • First, check the power cord and outlet.
  • Make sure the power supply is securely connected.
  • If you’re using an extension cord or power strip, plug directly into the wall.

2. Air Leaks or Mask Discomfort

  • Mask leaks are usually due to improper fit or worn-out cushions.
  • Try adjusting the straps or replacing the cushion.
  • Over-tightening can actually cause leaks—aim for a snug but gentle seal.

3. Dryness, Sore Throat, or Nose Irritation

  • Check your humidifier settings. Increasing humidity can help.
  • Use heated tubing if available to prevent dryness and rainout (water buildup).

4. Weird Noises or Whistling Sounds

  • These sounds often come from loose connections or dirty filters.
  • Re-seat the humidifier chamber and replace filters regularly.

When to Call for Service

If your CPAP displays error codes, stops producing pressure, or smells like something is burning, contact your equipment provider immediately. Machines typically last 5 years but may need professional maintenance sooner.

Don't Ignore Alerts

Modern CPAP machines are designed to alert you when something is wrong. Ignoring alarms or forcing a malfunctioning device to run may impact your therapy or void warranties.

Stay Ahead with Regular Maintenance

  • Replace filters every 2–4 weeks
  • Swap mask cushions every 1–3 months
  • Use distilled water daily
  • Schedule equipment checks annually
